March Subject

The March subject is Bokeh.  Use a shallow depth-of-field to draw attention to your subject, while leaving the other elements of the image out-of-focus.

For cameras that allow you to set an aperture, go as wide open as you can (smallest f-stop number);  f/2.8 or smaller will yield very dramatic results.  There are plenty of example on the web and how-to instructions.  Here's one handy guide.

For automatic, or point-and-shoot cameras, it's still possible to get a shallow depth of field.  There are plenty of sites that have guidance on how to do this.  Here's one that seemed to have some decent instructions.  And another.  I tried the latter and got some promising results.  If that doesn't work, don't give up.  As I said, there were other sites that had other instructions as well.  Google bokeh point and shoot and you'll find them.

A handy tool for determining depth-of-field is here.  It allows you to pick your camera model, aperture, and focal length.  It then gives the distances that are in focus and not.

Have fun.  :)
